  • PRODUCT INFO

These Javanese batik on wood elephants have gone through many wax and dye processes.

The craftsman would start with a light coloured wood elephant carving and then would put wax on all the parts of the design to remain white. It would then be put in a light orange dye. When the wood dried, all the design parts to remain light orange would have a wax coating.
The same procedure would take place and subsequent dyes of bright orange and black. The green on the ears might be painted and then waxed. The final stage would be putting the statues in boiling water to remove all the wax which results in the statues having very soft textures.

There is a similar blue batik on wood elephant, too.
